The LRTP Process
The Central Virginia Metropolitan Planning Organization (CVMPO) updates this important regional transportation plan every five years, providing a visionary blueprint for transportation improvements in the City of Lynchburg and the adjacent areas of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell County. This document, called the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) is required for any transportation project or service to receive federal funding. Without that funding, many roadway and multi-modal improvements would not be possible. This plan addressing most aspects of the urban area's transportation network, identifying improvements to roads, bike and pedestrian facilities, transit, bridges and other transportation elements that make the Central Virginia area a great place to live, visit and work.
Central Virginia MPO
The Metropolitan Planning Organization is an entity encouraged by federal legislation whose mandate is to help ensure that current and future expenditures for transportation programs and projects have a basis or foundation in a continuing, cooperative, and comprehensive planning--the "3-C" planning process.
